"Paint the Pavement" project beautifies Aurora-St. Anthony

Take a drive on Aurora Avenue a little bit west of Dale Street and you'll see the result of a recent project led by Summit-U Board member Rena Moran.

Moran, the Aurora Block Club captain, organized a group of community members to submit designs they believed would convey their vision for their neighborhood.

The chosen design, the Chinese symbol yin-yang, traditionally represents
an understanding of how things work.
The outer circle represents "everything", while the shapes within the circle represent the interaction of two energies, called "yin" (black) and "yang" (white), which cause everything to happen. They are not completely black or white, just as things in life are not completely black or white, and they cannot exist without each other.

The block club's interpretation of this symbol is the representation of unity, balance, love and peace in their community.

Community members, some as young as three years-old, gathered to work on the design, painting late into the night, illuminated by one resident who brought out a large flashlight so the painting could continue until complete. The end result: a work of art to demonstrate community unity and commitment and, for the residents, a sense of pride as each can say, "I did that!"

This project was made possible through the contributions of many residents, paint from the Valspar Corporation and funds from the Aurora-St. Anthony Neighborhood Development Corporation for brushes and other supplies.
